This illustrated map of Argentina is my latest map and the first map illustration I’ve created for 2020.
Throughout the years of creating map illustrations I’ve been asked by different people to create map illustrations of South American countries and this map of Argentina is the first South American country map illustration I’ve created. There will however definitely be more South American countries, as well as other countries of course coming up in the future.
Recently I’ve been doing a lot of work with Australian customers so my next map is going to be Australia but who knows what I’ll do after that.
One of the reasons I created this map of Argentina is because one of my colleagues from my previous life as a chef just had a new baby girl. My colleague has been very supportive and caring about my art career and every time I share a new illustration on Instagram or Facebook he has liked every single one of them. So this time I really wanted to do something for him and that’s why I created this map illustration which I will print and post to him, in Argentina I might add, this coming Monday.
I found the biggest challenge of illustrating this map was collecting information. I don’t know any Spanish and a lot of information online that I found about Argentina is in Spanish or mixed with English. There isn’t a lot of information about many parts of Argentina easily available. Most of the travel information I found was about Bueno Aires, so finding information was challenging.
I try to illustrate all of my maps as accurately as possible but I also like my map illustrations to be fun and celebrate the culture of the country I’m illustrating. So having complete geographical accuracy is not the main purpose. The way I illustrate this kind of map is by states, provinces or regions first then I’ll find the capital city of each and add 1-3 fun things about that city and region.
I also must point out when I illustrate a map, I’m focusing on just that country. For example, when I illustrated Spain before, loads of people contacted me and complained that I didn’t illustrate neighbouring Portugal or icons that were placed over Portugal were incorrect. Of course they are incorrect, they are related to Spain but I didn’t have the space. So this map is for Argentina only.
I love all Argentinian architectures and the colours they use are so beautiful and passionate! Argentinian food is delicious as well! All the steaks, bbq’s and desserts are just WOW! I have to put “Tango dance couples” and Mate tea on this map as well as these two things are a very important part of culture to Argentina.
A little information to share with people who live in Edinburgh. I recently discovered we have a local bakery called Zest here in Edinburgh and they make so many super yummy Argentina desserts. I have to admit I might order lots desserts from them and try to make it sounds totally professional for the reference purposes. But in fact we are just love those delicious desserts too much and piggy it out. I have never try Argentina desserst before so I don’t know how authentic is it but it’s certainly delicious! You can order from here: https://www.zestedinburgh.co.uk/
Anyway I hope you like my map of Argentina illustration.
