Snapchat Geofilters

Snapchat Geofilters. About a month ago I was headhunted by “Snapchat” (Snap Inc.) through a popular creative sharing website Behance. I’ve been using Behance for a few years and it’s a really great way of getting your work out there and low and behold Snapchat sent me a message saying they really like my illustrations and they really want me to commission me to create a series of geofilters for French speaking people.

As a creative and especially an illustrator/graphic designer/photographer etc, I think everyone is waiting for that message or call from a huge company like Snapchat/Facebook/Instagram/Twitter etc and I was literally speechless when I received that message from Snapchat.

In my, so far, short career Snapchat is by far the most high profile customer I’ve had. Almost everyone knows Snapchat including my 80 year old neighbours upstairs from where I live. The idea with these Snapchat Geofilters is they are focused on locals and things that are local to them, rather than for tourists. I tested Snapchat Geofilters for Edinburgh and it came up with the swimming pool at the end of the road (amongst other things of course). There are 29 countries that speak French natively which means very like these 29 countries, if they use Snapchat, are going to use my geofilters on their photos and share them with their friends and family. How cool is that! Potentially millions of people are going to see my illustrations.

Snapchat is also a brilliant company to work with. I’m required to submit so many geofilters per week (varies) and once approved, which is usually within 24-48 hours of submitting, they pay. They encourage their designers/illustrators to be creative, fun and quirky. There are only a couple tiny guidelines but I’ve had so much fun playing around with different designs and hand lettering.

I’ll give you an example. One week I was really into the whole outdoorsy theme so I illustrated a lot of camp fires camps, backpacks with maps, bbq’s at a campfire etc. Another week I was really into science classes and cute stationary so I illustrated and designed a lot of my Monday (Lundi) to Thursday (Jeudi) geofilters with all these cute stationary and laboratory illustrations. I also illustrated a lot of music instruments, televisions, radios and boomboxes for the weekend geofilters as a lot of people like using these things especially at the weekend.

This is an ongoing project and I’ve just completed the first part of my contract which was to design and illustrate 70 geofilters for Monday to Sunday. I’m now working on a set of filters for Australia including a set for the LGBT community which I’m absolutely loving. So stay tuned for more Snapchat Geofilters in the near future.
